Tom Bombadil Forn, Orald Iarwain Ben-adar (Oldest and Fatherless). Spirit of Earth and Woods. Lives with Goldberry in the Old Forest

  Exactly what types of spirit Tom and Goldberry are is open to interpretation. Some regard them as
  enigmas, others as Maiar spirits, or maybe two of the Valar - Aulë and Yavanna

Fimbrethil Wandlimb An Entwife. Treebeard's sweetheart before the Entwives left
Finglas Leaflock An old sleepy, tree-ish Ent
Fladrif Skinbark An old Ent, wounded by Saruman's Orcs in the tree-felling

Treated with suspicion by the leaders of the Men of Gondor and Rohan.
The White Rider / Gandalf The White on his return to Middle-earth after his battle with the Balrog.
Left Middle-earth with the other Ring-Bearers at the end of the Third Age
Radagast The Brown Friend of the animal world, based at Rhosgobel, near Mirkwood

Unquiet spirits of the Men of The Mountains who failed to keep their oath of loyalty to Gondor made on the Stone of Erech and sided with Sauron. Cursed by Isildur to await, under the Dwimorberg, a summons to fulfill the oath
Lord of the Nazgul Witch-King of Angmar Chief of the Ring-wraiths. Slain by Eowyn and Merry at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, Gondor
Melkor Morgoth The evil Vala driven out of Arda (the world) in the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age. Sauron's master and inspiration

The wraiths of the nine Kings of Men given Rings of Power by Sauron and enslaved as spirit-servants
Sauron The Necromancer A Maiar spirit. The most powerful servant and Lieutenant of Morgoth / Melkor. Driven from Dol Guldur at the time of the Quest of Erebor, only to re-emerge in Mordor
Shelob   Guardian of the pass at Cirith Ungol. Last child of Ungoliant, an ancient spirit who took shape as a Spider

Yrch / Gorgun. Bred by Morgoth from captured Elves. Used as slaves and soldiers.
Common orcs were originally unable to tolerate daylight
Azog   Orc who killed Thror in Moria. Later killed by Dain
Bolg   Son of Azog. Leader of the Goblins/Orcs of Mt Gunabad. Slain by Beorn, Battle of Five Armies (The Hobbit)
Gorbag   Uruk Captain, Tower of Cirith Ungol
Gothmog   Lieutenant of Minas Morgul. Deputy to the Lord of the Nazgul
Great Orc Great Goblin Chief Goblin/Orc, in the High Pass through the Misty Mts. Killed by Gandalf (The Hobbit)
Grishnakh   Captain of the orcs of Sauron at Parth Galen. Slain in Rohan
Lagduf   An orc of the Tower of Cirith Ungol
Lugdush   One of the orcs with Ugluk. Slain in Rohan
Mauhur   Leader of a band of Orcs from Mordor. Slain in Rohan
Muzgash   An orc of the Tower of Cirith Ungol
Radbug   An orc of the Tower of Cirith Ungol
Shagrat   Orc Captain, Tower of Cirith Ungol
Snaga "Slave" Lesser Orcs, sneered at by their Captains (Parth Galen and Tower of Cirith Ungol)
Ufthak   A former orc of Minas Morgul, snared by Shelob
Ugluk   Captain of a band of Saruman's Uruks. Slain in Rohan
Uruk-Hai Uruks Great Orcs, bred for fighting by Sauron and able to operate in daylight

Stone-giants   Somewhat careless hurlers of rocks in the Misty Mountains (The Hobbit)
Wargs   Large unfriendly wolf-like beasts. Normally only found East of the Misty Mts

Ainur Holy Ones Gods and Godesses (Valar / Valier) who helped Iluvatar create the Earth
Valar Powers of Arda The Ainur who came down to Arda as its Guardians. Their home is Valinor in the land of Aman, in the uttermost West, accessible only to Elves. They also look after the souls of slain Elves and Dwarves
Varda Elbereth, Gilthoniel Queen of the Valier. Creator of the stars, hence the Elves' reverence for her. (Star Queen / Star-Kindler)
Melkor Morgoth The mightiest of the Valar. The equivalent of Satan and Sauron's master. Expelled from Earth by the Valar at the end of the First Age
Maiar   Powerful but lesser spirits than the Valar, brought to Arda as their helpers
Istari Wizards Maiar spirits, five of whom were sent to Middle-earth by the Valar in the Third Age to contest the power of Sauron:
  Saruman (The oldest),   Olorin / Mithrandir (The wisest)  and  Radagast.  Two others went East
Valaraukar Balrogs The Maiar spirits of fire who gave their allegiance to Melkor
